Drug Rehab - What is it and Who Really Needs it...
Conventional Drug Rehab Treatment Centers Information
Rehabilitation is most often defined as the process of restoration of skills by a person who has had an illness or injury so as to regain maximum self-sufficiency and function in a normal or as near to normal as possible.
Drug rehabilitation or “rehab” commonly focuses on the persons “illness” or “disease”. Conventional treatment in drug rehab is the 12-step method. Many people who attend 12-step based and disease model facilities are told that they are forever in the process of rehabilitation, will never again be normal and the only treatment for their disease is meetings for the rest of their lives. This leaves the person feeling doomed, defective and flawed in some way.
The truth is, the person themselves is not flawed, but rather what they are being taught. Telling an already vulnerable person that they are diseased, powerless and that they will inevitably relapse just instills fear and sets them up for failure. The truth is you are not sick or diseased, you are a human being in need of some help and guidance. Drug abuse is a choice which is a wonderful fact because that means YOU have the power to make different, more productive choices that will lead you to a happier life. Here at the St. Jude Retreat House our guests learn how to stop looking to the past, but instead create their future. The Jude Thaddeus Program is designed to help people move on with their lives, drug free.
Drug detox- Do I need it?
Medical detoxification from drugs is most commonly used for people who abuse opiates (prescription pain medications, heroin), opiate replacements (methadone, suboxone, subutex), and Benzodiazepines (xanax). Withdrawal symptoms from opiate replacements and benzodiazepines can be severe and sometimes life threatening without medical assistance. If you are abusing these drugs please consult your physician to see if drug detox is right for you.
For those who abuse stimulants (cocaine, crack cocaine, methamphetamines) or marijuana, there is no medical detoxification process and no physical withdrawal symptoms.
If you are considering changing your life permanently, detox is just the beginning. Learning how to stay clean is extremely important. At the St. Jude Retreat House, we can teach you just that. If you or a loved one is abusing drugs, we can help. |
