Heroin Rehab - What is it and Who Really Needs it...
Conventional Heroin Rehab Treatment Centers Information
Heroine in its purest form is a white powder with a bitter taste. Illicit heroin is a powder form which may vary in color from white to dark brown because of impurities or additives. Street names include smack, junk, dope, horse, brown sugar, skunk.
Heroin was first synthesized from morphine in 1874. In its early years, heroin was used for anything from post-operative pain relief to soothing the gums of teething babies.
The effects of heroin include a feeling of euphoria or a “rush”, skin flushing and itching, heavy extremities, and dry mouth. Heroin can be snorted, smoked or injected. Contrary to popular belief, heroin is not used recreationally primarily to experience pleasure. Rather it more often becomes a habit in an attempt by the user to escape the long-term demoralizing psychological effects of depression, overwhelming and unresolved life problems, and just as often extreme poverty and other poor living conditions. Often times, addicts with the least economic mobility will spend most of their money in order to obtain more heroin. Some describe its initial effects as being many times better than the most intense orgasm, but as the physical euphoria fades it is the feeling of contentedness and freedom from worry that is what actually makes the drug so attractive.
Discontinued use of heroin can include uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms within 6 to 24 after last use including sweating, anxiety, depression, cramp-like pains in limbs, insomnia, chills, cold sweats, muscle and bone aches, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, goose bumps and fever. The flu-like symptoms can last anywhere from 2-10 days while the muscle and bone cramping can last up to 2 weeks.
Heroin detoxification in a medical facility is recommended but not required. Due to the uncomfortable nature of heroin withdrawals, some people consider hospitalization for 3-5 days.
If you or a loved one is struggling with heroin abuse, please don’t lose hope. The St. Jude Thaddeus Program has helped many people who abuse heroin, permanently recover. |
