The Jude Thaddeus Program

The Most Successful Substance Abuse Program in the Country

Before rehabilitation programs began people recovered from 'alcoholism' and other compulsive and obsessive behaviors. It is important to understand the difference between recovered and recovering. Treatment today teaches that people can never get well completely and be free of the obsession to drink or drug. Before treatment existed this was not the case. Past programs promoted recovery or the idea that a person can be who they were before they ever drank or drugged. The Jude Thaddeus Program teaches people that they can actually be a better person than before they drank or used drugs.

The Jude Thaddeus Program is based on a Social - Educational Model, providing people with the necessary tools to achieve permanent sobriety

Social Program Component

The Jude Thaddeus Program operates on the premise that learning through experience is an integral part of the recovery process. The program is structured so that opportunities exist to experience a sober and drug free life and to observe and interact with persons at different stages of this same process. Guests are taught the truth about substance abuse, addiction and recovery. People are educated and empowered, and shown first hand that their success is based on their own choices and actions. By learning the immense power of choice, recognizing behavior patterns, and replacing negative habits with positive habits guests continuously gain self-confidence throughout their six-week stay. Identifying and overcoming underlying problems that led to the self-destructive behavior is a key component in the Jude Thaddeus experience and gives each graduate the best opportunity to succeed.

Social Characteristics of the Jude Thaddeus Program

  • An alcohol and drug free environment is a crucial part of the Jude Thaddeus Program.
  • The primary responsibility to change one’s behaviors is viewed as being held by the individual participant rather than the program or program staff.
  • People are taught how to interact with one another more productively, and to improve the quality of their relationships through experiential learning.
  • All program participants have enrolled in the program voluntarily and are motivated to change their lives.
  • Individual responsibility is reinforced through shared decision making with program participants.

Educational Program Component

Guests at the St. Jude Retreat at Lake Algonquin have a one-on-one relationship with instructors. From the beginning, guests are treated with the respect and dignity afforded to a good friend. Guests are in charge of their own recovery; they remain responsible for their own decisions. The willingness to complete the program must come from the guest.
The educational experience is an entirely different approach from the more common counseling and therapeutic approach. The approach is remarkably simple. Guests are taught how to recover using a method that they know has worked for others. The method includes three phases. The first two weeks are dedicated to Phase One which provides a complete understanding of alcohol and drug problems based on scientific information, not theories and speculation. Phase One then provides students with a specific solution for those problems. Phase Two immediately puts into action the techniques learned in Phase One. Phase Three provides training for making permanent lifestyle changes, and setting and achieving goals. Making positive changes to one’s life can require more time for some than others. Jude Thaddeus Continuing Education was developed to give people more time to embrace what they have learned, put their new way of life into practice and plan for their future. Educational Components of the Jude Thaddeus Program

  • The educational program is a recovery plan based on information and empowerment rather than psychological therapy.
  • The educational program teaches the guest how to assess the seriousness of their condition and to determine how committed they are to their own permanent recovery.
  • Guests are taught exactly how to get sober and drug free and how to stay that way.
  • Guests are provided with one-on-one guidance as they plan for their future.
  • Guests are encouraged to set realistic short and long term goals, and are shown the immense possibilities for their life.
  • Inspiration, motivation, education and guidance are provided to give guests the tools for continued success.
  • All guests leave the program knowing that the key components to their success lie completely within themselves.
