Jude Thaddeus Program Philosophy

Substance Abuse Problems are the consequence of poor choices.

Before rehabilitation programs began people recovered from 'alcoholism' and other compulsive and obsessive behaviors. It is important to understand the difference between recovered and recovering. Treatment today teaches that people can never get well completely and be free of the obsession to drink or drug. Before treatment existed this was not the case.

Past programs promoted recovery or the idea that a person can be who they were before they ever drank or drugged. The Jude Thaddeus Program teaches people that they can actually be a better person than before they drank or used drugs.

Guests at the St. Jude Retreat at Lake Algonquin have a one-on-one relationship with instructors. From the beginning, guests are treated with the respect and dignity afforded to a good friend. Guests are in charge of their own recovery; they remain responsible for their own decisions. The willingness to complete the program must come from the guest.

The educational experience is an entirely different approach from the more common counseling and therapeutic approach. The approach is remarkably simple. Guests are taught how to recover using a method that they know has worked for others. The method includes four separate phases. Phase One is a two-week course that provides a complete understanding of alcohol and drug problems and a specific solution for those problems. Phase Two immediately puts into action the techniques learned in Phase One. Phase Three provides training for setting and achieving goals. Many of our former guests return to the St. Jude Retreat to visit because they want to pass on the message that "this works" to the new guest who is just making his/her beginning in the program.
